These are real repairs, done in-house at our Winter Garden bench. No subcontracting, no shipping your machine to a third party, and no board swap when the board can be repaired. A large share of the machines below arrived after an Apple Store or another shop had already told the customer nothing could be done.
When Apple or Another Shop Said No
This is the category we are known for. A service center that only replaces whole assemblies will quote a board swap or declare a total loss, because replacement is the only tool in their process. Repairing the specific component that failed usually costs a fraction of that.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2485, M1 Pro) — Apple issued a total loss diagnosis
Apple assessed the machine and declared it a total loss. The customer drove an hour to get a second opinion instead of accepting it. The board was repairable at component level and the Mac went home working. A total loss verdict means that service center will not repair the board within their process. It does not mean the board cannot be repaired.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2991, M3) — Apple quoted $1,500 for a new board after liquid damage
Liquid damage on an M3 Pro machine, with Apple quoting fifteen hundred dollars for a board replacement. Repaired at component level instead, for a small fraction of that figure.
MacBook Pro (A2918, M-series) — A small area of corrosion was keeping it from powering on
The machine would not turn on. The customer went to Apple first and was told the board needed replacing, which is the standard recommendation. A proper inspection found localized corrosion on the board. After replacing a couple of components the machine came back to life, for a fraction of what a board replacement would have cost.
MacBook Pro 14″ (M2) — Restored after Apple said it needed a new board
Apple told the customer the logic board had to be replaced. The machine was restored successfully without replacing it.
MacBook Pro — Apple refused service citing liquid damage that did not exist
Apple declined to work on this machine, stating it had liquid damage. On inspection there was no liquid damage at all. The actual fault was repaired here in twenty minutes. The customer, from Windermere, left happier than ever.
MacBook Pro 14″ (M4) — Another shop tried and failed, data fully recovered
The owner spilled liquid on the machine while traveling in Oregon and took it to a local shop, which could not repair it. The situation was extremely data-sensitive. After a few hours of component-level work here, the Mac was running again and all data was recovered intact.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2485) — Water bottle leaked inside a travel bag
A bottle of water leaked into the customer’s bag. Moderate damage, treated within a couple of hours. Apple had told the customer the machine was finished. It was not.
Component-Level Logic Board Repair
Most failures on a modern Mac logic board come down to one or two components, not the whole board. Finding them requires a microscope, schematics and measurement — which is why most shops quote a replacement instead.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2485) — One microscopic transistor
The entire machine was down because of a single microscopic transistor. Replaced, and the Mac was back on track.
MacBook Air (A2337, M1) — Two microscopic components preventing power-on
No signs of life. Two tiny components were responsible. Both replaced, machine restored.
MacBook Pro 14″ (A2442) — A shorted component had killed the whole board
A single shorted component was pulling the entire board down. Once identified and replaced, the machine worked normally again. A board that appears completely dead is very often one failed part away from working.
iMac — A fried transistor, with critical data on a Fusion Drive
The iMac would not power on and the customer had highly sensitive data sitting on a Fusion Drive, which meant the machine had to come back to life rather than simply having its storage pulled. A fried transistor was the cause. Repaired, and the data was recovered.
MacBook Pro 14″ (M3) — No power caused by corrosion on the main power rail
No signs of life. The cause was corrosion build-up on the main power rail, not a failed board. On Apple Silicon MacBooks, a dead machine after liquid exposure is frequently a localized power-rail fault rather than a whole-board failure.
MacBook Pro 13″ (A2338, M1) — Board sections rebuilt after liquid damage
Liquid had destroyed traces across several areas of the logic board. Those sections were rebuilt rather than replacing the board.
MacBook Pro 13″ (A2338) — USB-C fault on a maxed-out configuration
The customer came from Apopka with a top-specification A2338 and needed both a repair and data recovery. The fault was traced to the USB-C circuitry. Board repaired, machine restored.
MacBook Pro 13″ (A2338) — Keyboard restored by repairing the board, not replacing the top case
The keyboard was completely dead. Faulty components were identified, replaced, and wires run to restore the affected traces. On these models the standard fix is an entire top case assembly, which is dramatically more expensive.
MacBook Air (M2) — Liquid damage across four separate assemblies
A dead M2 MacBook Air from Kissimmee, damaged by liquid. Restored after work on the logic board, the daughter board, the angle sensor and the headphone connector.
MacBook Pro 13″ (A1708) and MacBook Pro 14″ (A2442) — Dead after liquid, both revived
Two separate machines that arrived with no signs of life following liquid exposure. In both cases the damaged components were identified individually and replaced, and both went home working.
MacBook Pro 15″ (A1990) — Arrived completely dead after liquid exposure
No power, no signs of life. Damaged components replaced one by one until the machine was fully operational.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2141) — Battery connector torn off and melted keyboard keys
The customer from Orlando arrived with a ripped-off battery connector and several keyboard keys melted. Both repaired.
MacBook Pro — Battery socket destroyed during a DIY attempt
The customer tore the battery socket off his own board trying to do the job himself. Rebuilding the connector and pads properly would have meant waiting for parts, and the customer needed the machine immediately. With his authorization, the battery was soldered directly, on the understanding that it would be the last battery that machine receives. Sometimes the right repair is the one that fits the customer’s actual situation.
MacBook Air (A2681, M2) — Angle sensor replacement and calibration after mild liquid damage
The customer came from Bradenton. Mild liquid exposure had taken out the lid angle sensor, which required replacement and calibration.
Thermal Failures: The Most Preventable Repair We See
Dried-out thermal compound is one of the most common causes of shutdowns, throttling and outright death in Macs, gaming PCs and graphics cards. It is routine maintenance that almost nobody performs, and it is frequently misdiagnosed as a failed power supply or logic board.
Mac Pro 6,1 (“Trash Can”) — From 15 seconds of runtime to over 2 hours
The machine was shutting down in under 15 seconds. The thermal compound on both GPUs and the processor had degraded completely. After replacement it ran for more than two hours without issue.
MacBook Pro 15″ (A1990) — Killed outright by dried thermal compound on the GPU
This machine was dead, and the cause was the absence of usable thermal compound on the GPU. This is routine maintenance that was skipped until the hardware failed.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2141) — Shutting down immediately after startup
The machine powered on and then shut down within seconds. New thermal compound and a full internal dust cleaning resolved it.
MacBook Pro 15″ (2019, maxed configuration) — 64 GB RAM, 4 TB SSD, nearly dead
A customer from Windermere brought in a fully specified 2019 MacBook Pro with 64 GB of RAM, a 4 TB SSD and an 8 GB GPU. A genuine workhorse, almost lost to missing thermal compound and accumulated dust. After service it runs fast and significantly cooler.
iMac 27″ (2020) — Almost entirely out of thermal compound
A powerful machine running on essentially nothing. The service was involved, but the iMac was restored to proper operation.
NVIDIA GPU — Heatsink marked by running without compound
This card had never been serviced and failed from a complete lack of thermal compound. The damage was visible as a burn mark on the heatsink where the die had been running dry against it.
MacBook Pro Retina 15″ (A1398, 2015) — One of Apple’s great workhorses, saved
A customer from Clermont brought in a 2015 A1398 struggling from missing thermal compound. One trip and the machine was back in service.
Screen and Display Replacement
Turnaround matters as much as price on a screen. We stock the common assemblies and most replacements are completed while the customer waits.
MacBook Air (A2337, M1) — Display assembly replaced in 20 minutes
Twenty minutes from arrival to a working machine. The customer came from Gotha.
MacBook Pro 14″ (A2442) — Screen replaced in about 40 minutes
The customer needed the machine the same day after an accident. Done in roughly forty minutes.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2485) — Screen replaced on a Sunday morning
The customer drove from Orlando on a Sunday, when most shops are closed, and left with a working machine.
MacBook Pro 14″ (A2918) — Display replaced after a cat bite
Not every failure is conventional. The screen was replaced and the machine returned to normal.
Additional display work
Screen and display assembly replacements completed on the A2338, A2337, A2485, A2442, A2441, A2681, A2992, A3114, A3240, A1708, A1989, A1990, A2141, A2289 and A2991, along with a 2015 MacBook Pro 15″ whose earlier replacement screen had failed. Also iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro Max, iPhone 14 Pro, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, iPad Air, iPad Air 5th generation, iPad 10th generation and iPad Pro.
Data Recovery
iMac — Fusion Drive recovery that depended on reviving the machine first
Sensitive data on a Fusion Drive, inside a machine that would not power on. Repairing the board was the only route to the files, and both succeeded.
Mac mini (2011) — SSD upgrade with full data recovery
The data was the priority. New SSD fitted and every file recovered and migrated. Older Macs with failing drives are usually recoverable if they are not repeatedly powered on after symptoms begin.
MacBook Pro 13″ (A2338) — macOS rebuild after a Time Machine failure
The customer’s Time Machine backup had failed and there was not enough space to complete the upgrade. Clean macOS install with all data migrated back afterwards. Nothing was lost.
Two iPads — Transferring data from a device with a broken screen and no backup
An awkward situation: the source iPad had a broken screen and no backup existed. A route was found and the data moved across.
Locks and Firmware
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2141) — MDM lock resolved
The customer traveled from Orlando with a machine under an MDM lock. Resolved and returned usable.
iMac (2020) — MDM keys bypassed
Same category of problem on a desktop. The customer came from Saint Cloud.
Beyond Macs
Apple hardware is the specialty, but component-level skill transfers. These came through the same bench.
PlayStation 5 — HDMI port replacement, including one with a dead board
A failed HDMI port is one of the most common PS5 faults and it is a soldering job, not a console replacement. One of these arrived with a dead board alongside the bad HDMI, and both were recovered.
Mac Studio — Power supply replaced after a power surge
The customer came from Apopka. Surge damage isolated to the power supply.
Gaming PC — New motherboard after a power surge
Everything transplanted to a new board and the machine returned to service.
ASUS ROG gaming tablet — Liquid metal and thermal paste renewal
An unusual machine with demanding cooling requirements, restored to like-new thermal performance.
HP laptop — A second fan that was not real
A customer from Windermere brought in a noisy HP laptop for a fan replacement. The machine had shipped from the factory with one working fan and one non-functional dummy fan in the second position. After the work it has two genuine fans and considerably better cooling.
Phone logic board sent in by another repair shop
A cellphone board arrived from another shop for socket replacement and board-level repair. Other technicians send us the work they cannot complete.
MacBook Pro 17″ (A1297) — Still running after 15 years
Serviced and still in daily use a decade and a half after leaving the factory.
Additional non-Apple work
Gaming PCs diagnosed and repaired for GPU faults, boot failures, failed power supplies, outdated BIOS and watercooler replacement. Windows 11 installations including on unsupported hardware. Dell, Acer, Lenovo and HP laptops recovered through firmware updates, board repair, hinge repair and thermal service. NVIDIA and GeForce graphics cards serviced for thermal failure and chip reflow.
When a Board Cannot Be Saved
Honesty matters more than a perfect record. Component-level repair is not always possible, and when it is not, we say so.
MacBook Pro 13″ (A2338) — Logic board replaced after an unrecoverable short
Some shorts cannot be rebuilt. This board was replaced rather than repaired.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2141) — Logic board replaced after multiple section faults
Damage spread across too many areas of the board to justify repair.
MacBook Pro 16″ (A2485) — Catastrophic board damage
The board was completely destroyed. The machine was brought back to life through extensive work, though the scale of damage put it well outside a routine repair.
A Note on Liquid Damage and Timing
Liquid damage is the repair where timing changes the outcome more than anything else. Corrosion spreads continuously after the spill, and every attempt to power the machine on accelerates it.
We have had machines arrive six months after a spill. At that point the damage is no longer what the liquid did — it is what six months of corrosion did afterwards.
The opposite case is worth mentioning too. A customer brought in an M4 MacBook Pro 14″ after a mild spill, while the machine was still working normally. That was the right call: it was inspected and cleaned before corrosion had a chance to cause a fault. If you spill something on a Mac, do not wait for symptoms, and do not power it on to check.
